Golden hour — using light while travelling

The golden hour is the period just after sunrise and before sunset, when light is warm, soft and full of direction. It is the simplest way to make an ordinary place look extraordinary in a photo.

When exactly is the golden hour

It lasts roughly an hour after sunrise and an hour before sunset, but its length changes with latitude and season. In the far north in summer it can stretch for hours; in the tropics it is short.

Why this light is the best

A low sun gives warm colours and long, soft shadows that model terrain and buildings. Contrast is gentle, so it is easier to keep detail in both highlights and shadows.

Get in position early

Be on the spot 15–20 minutes ahead with your frame ready — the best light changes minute by minute. Check the direction of the sun so you know what will be lit.

Do not put the camera away after sunset

Right after the golden comes the "blue hour" — cool, deep tones, ideal for cities and water. A steady support or tripod helps then.

Combine it with the other rules

Light works best with good composition and a foreground — see how to photograph landscapes, and after dark how to photograph the night sky. Gather the best frames into a story in TRAMFI.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check golden-hour times?

Use a weather or photography app with sunrise and sunset times for the location and date.

Does the golden hour work on a cloudy day?

Light cloud can diffuse the light beautifully. Thick, dark clouds usually "eat" the effect — then it is better to go for mood than colour.
