Passport or ID card
Within the Schengen area an ID card is usually enough; outside it you need a passport — often still valid for several months after you return. Check the destination's requirements well ahead.
Visa and entry requirements
Some countries require a visa or electronic entry authorisation, sometimes also a return ticket or proof of accommodation. Sort this out before departure, not at the airport.
Insurance and the EHIC

Driving licence and car papers
If you plan to drive, check whether you need an international driving permit. Car rental usually also requires a credit card for the deposit.
